Jane Austen Early Life


Jane Austen was an anti-romantic English novelist in the Romantic Age. She is called of anti-romantic because of her stern attitude against youthful passion. She was famous for her six major novels. Jane Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security.

Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 in Stevenon, Hampshire, United kingdom. She was born a month later than the normal birth. She was baptised on 5 April 1776 at the local church with the single name Jane. Her father's name is George Austen, he came from wealthy respected family of wool merchants. From generation to generation eldest sons received inheritance. This is why George's family fell into poverty. George and his two sisters were orphaned as children. His sister Philadelphia went to India to find a husband. George studied at St. John's College Where he met Cassandra Leigh. Cassandra Leigh father was rector at All Souls College, Oxford.

George and Cassandra were engaged probably in 1763. After two months later Cassandra father died and they married on 26 April 1764 at St. Swithin's Church in Bath in ordinary ceremony. The same day they left for Hampshire.
