The main construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge had begun in 2015 when PM Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the works of the main bridge and river training. The bridge with 41 spans, 18.18m width, and 6.15 km total length, is going to be the longest bridge in Bangladesh.

Padma Multipurpose Bridge is going to boost the GDP of Bangladesh by as much as 1.2 percent. More than 81% of the total construction work has been done and 91% of the construction work of the main bridge is complete, according to project officials.

The contractor of the bridge is “China Major Bridge Engineering Corporation”. It is a truss bridge and material of the bridge is steel. The bridge will open a new horizon in the communication system of the country. It will bring a revolutionary change in the life of south-west residents.


For this, regional corporation will be increased. In addition, it will play an important role in the economic sector of Bangladesh. Industrial development and employment opportunities will be increased. Not only economy and transportation facilities will increase but also medical and educational facilities will be easy to access.

The Padma bridge is a multipurpose bridge across the river Padma in Bangladesh. It connects Mawa of Munshiganj with Janjira of Shariatpur.

The 6.15 km long and 18.18 metre wide bridge has a total of 42 pillars and 41 spans have been placed on the pillars. Each of the pillars is 150 metre long.

It is the longest river crossing in South Asia. The bridge is considered to be the most challenging construction project in the history of Bangladesh. China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Company Limited was given the task to construct the bridge.

Construction work started on 7 December 2014 with the expectation of completing by June 2022. The whole project cost is estimated to be US 3.868 billion. Apart from improving regional cooperation and communication, the bridge will bring a radical change in industrial development. 

Medical and educational facilities will be easier to access for the bridge. It will benefit about 3 crore people across 21 south-western districts of Bangladesh.
