Pahela Baishakh is the first day of the Bengali new year. It is a public holiday. The first day of the new year is celebrated in a befitting manner all over the world.

In the same way, the Bangalis celebrate Pahela Baishakh, the first day of Bangla calender as the first day of new year. Pahela Baishakh is celebrated all over the country with due solemnity. Many cultural organisations arrange cultural programmes.

Colourful processions are brought out by the students and special programmes are telecast on TV Channels. The traders and shopkeepers open ‘Halkhata’ new account book and offer sweets to their customers and clients. People wear traditional dress on this day.

The Bangalis celebrate this day as a tradition. This day has great significance. The whole nation comes closer on this day. We have the chance to find out our cultural identity. Baishakhi Mela has a great attraction to the people of Bangladesh speacially to the village folk in Pahela Baishakh. People eat different kinds of foods.
