Bellerophon of Greece story class 7

Once a young shepherd Bellerophon lived in Greece. He lived in a hut on the bank

of a river by the mountainside. He used to work from dawn to dusk. He passed his days by cooking food, cutting wood, getting water, washing clothes, looking after the animals, and doing hundreds of other things. A huge dog named Philo was his constant companion.

One day Prince Proitos of Lycia came with a great fleet of boats on the river. The prince had a terrible reputation. So, Bellerophon said to himself “You don’t want to get mixed up with him”. A few days passed without any incident.

One day a few soldiers came to Bellerophon and said, “Hey, farm boy. We are running out

of meat. Our prince ordered us to buy your livestock.” “Sorry, sir. They are not for sale”, he replied. “How dare you!”, said one soldier.

The second soldier started to approach with a naked sword. Seeing this, Philo jumped and bit the second soldier on the arm. Seeing the dog’s size and ferocity, all the soldiers fled. Bellerophon immediately set free all his animals and started to run toward the mountain with his dog.

A few minutes after that the angry prince came with his men shouting, “Disrespectful shepherd! I will have your head”.

The soldiers searched the whole house but could not find him. “Look, he is running to the mountain”, one soldier said. “Go after him”, shouted the prince.

The prince’s host came to halt before a lake, huge and deep. “Why are you stopping here? Don’t you see he is on the other side?”, said the angry prince.

“My prince, there is no way to cross the lake”, said his men.

“How did he get across then? Come with me. I will swim across if I have to”, said the prince.

“Don’t do it, I say. You will regret it”, shouted Bellerophon. “Regret you will surely, farm boy”, said the prince before getting into the water with his men. Not more than a minute or two had passed and a great serpent appeared before them with a huge splashing of water.

“I am the serpent of this lake. How dare you get into it without my permission. You shall be punished”, said the giant serpent.

Before they could even move, the terrible and swift strike of the serpent came. The host drowned and so disappeared the serpent after thunderous laughter.

After everything settled down, Bellerophon crossed the lake by a secret path and went to his hut. When the news of his son’s death reached, King Lobates in Lycia sent for the man responsible for his son’s death. Bellerophon stated his case in front of the king.

The king appeared to be more reasonable than his son. “Do you have any witnesses to prove your case?”, said the king. “God is my witness”, said Bellerophon.

“God will not testify on your behalf, will He?”, said the queen. “But we can know the will of God by giving him a task to complete. If he completes the task, then he is innocent and if not, he is guilty”, said the priest. “What do you say, shepherd?”, said the king.

“I agree”, said Bellerophon. “Very well then”, said the queen, “Bring the head of the Chimera to prove yourself innocent”. They said,“ Wish you good luck.”

Chimera was a horrible fire-breathing monster with the head of a lion and a snake for a tail and the body of a goat. Bellerophon set out to complete his task. On his way to find the Chimera, he came across a huge dark forest. While he was crossing the forest, he heard a struggling sound. He looked for the source of the sound. He found that a horse was caught in a metal net. He came near to the horse carefully.

“Help me human”, said the horse when he saw Bellerophon. Bellerophon set the horse free. “I am Pegasus. I am grateful for your help but what are you doing in this dark forest?”, said the horse. Bellerophon told his reason for being here.

“Dangerous your task is! I shall help you as a token of our friendship”, said Pegasus. “How will we find the Chimera?”, said Bellerophon. “It will be easy as we will be flying”, said Pegasus opening his big wings.

After a while of flying, they came across the Chimera. It started to breathe fire as soon as it spotted them. Bellerophon shot arrow after arrow but could not kill the beast.

At last, he took his spear and threw it toward the opened mouth of the Chimera. With that strike, he killed the beast and took its head as proof of his success. He got a hero’s welcome when he got back to Lycia. All charges against him were dropped. “May you live long my son”, King Lycia said to Bellerophon. From then on, the young man was known as Bellerophon, the hero of Lycia.

একসময় এক তরুণ মেষপালক বেলেরোফোন গ্রিসে বাস করতেন। তিনি পাহাড়ের ধারে নদীর তীরে একটি কুঁড়েঘরে থাকতেন। তিনি ভোর থেকে সন্ধ্যা পর্যন্ত কাজ করতেন। 

খাবার রান্না করা, কাঠ কাটা, জল আনা, কাপড়চোপড় ধোয়া, পশুপাখির দেখাশোনা করা এবং আরও শত শত কাজ করে তার দিন কাটত। ফিলো নামের একটি বিশাল কুকুর ছিল তার নিত্যসঙ্গী।

একদিন লিসিয়ার প্রিন্স প্রিটোস নদীতে একটি বড় নৌবহর নিয়ে আসেন। রাজপুত্রের ভয়ংকর কুখ্যাতি ছিল। তাই বেলেরোফোন নিজেকে বলল, ‘তুমি তাঁর সাথে মিশে যেতে চেয়ো না।’

কোনো অঘটন ছাড়াই কেটে গেল কয়েক দিন। একদিন কয়েকজন সৈন্য বেলেরোফোনের কাছে এসে বলল, ‘আরে, খামারের ছেলে। আমাদের মাংস ফুরিয়ে যাচ্ছে। আমাদের রাজপুত্র আমাদের আপনার গবাদিপশু কেনার নির্দেশ দিয়েছেন।’

‘দুঃখিত জনাব।’ ‘এগুলো বিক্রয়ের জন্য নয়’, তিনি উত্তর দিলেন। ‘তোমার সাহস কত!’, একজন সৈনিক বলল। দ্বিতীয় সৈন্য একটি নগ্ন তলোয়ার বের করে তার দিকে যেতে শুরু করে দিল।

এটা দেখে ফিলো লাফ দিয়ে দ্বিতীয় সৈনিককে কামড় দিল। কুকুরের আকার ও হিংস্রতা দেখে সব সৈন্য পালিয়ে গেল।বেলেরোফোন অবিলম্বে তার সব প্রাণীকে মুক্ত করে তার কুকুরকে নিয়ে পাহাড়ের দিকে ছুটতে শুরু করল।

এর কয়েক মিনিট পর রাগান্বিত রাজপুত্র তাঁর লোকদের সাথে নিয়ে এসে চিৎকার করে বলতে লাগল, ‘অসম্মান প্রদর্শনকারী রাখাল! আমি তোমার মাথা কেটে নেব।’ সৈন্যরা সারা বাড়ি তল্লাশি করেও তাকে পায়নি।

‘দেখুন, সে পাহাড়ের দিকে দৌড়াচ্ছে’, একজন সৈনিক বলল। ‘তার পেছনে যাও’, চেঁচিয়ে উঠল রাজকুমার। রাজকুমারের সৈন্যবাহিনী একটি বিশাল, গভীর হ্রদের সামনে এসে থামল। ‘তোমরা এখানে থামলে কেন? দেখতে পাচ্ছ না যে সে অন্য দিকে আছে?’, রাগান্বিত রাজকুমার বলল।

‘আমাদের রাজপুত্র, হ্রদ পার হওয়ার কোনো উপায় নেই’, তার লোকেরা বলল। ‘তাহলে সে কীভাবে গেল? আমার সাথে এসো। আমি দরকার হলে সাঁতার কেটে পার হব’, রাজকুমার বলল। 

‘এটা করবেন না, আমি বলছি। আপনি এটির জন্য অনুশোচনা করবেন’, বেলেরোফোন চেঁচিয়ে উঠলেন। ‘নিশ্চয়ই তুমিই অনুশোচনা করবে, খামারি ছেলে’, রাজকুমার তার লোকদের সাথে জলে নামার আগে বলল।

এক বা দুই মিনিটের বেশি সময় কাটল না এর মধ্যেই একটি বিশাল সাপ বিপুল জলের ঝাপটা দিয়ে তাদের সামনে এসে হাজির হলো। 

‘আমি এই হ্রদের সাপ। আমার অনুমতি ছাড়া এখানে ঢুকতে তোমার সাহস হলো কীভাবে? তোমাকে শাস্তি দেওয়া হবে’ দৈত্য সর্প বলল।

তারা নড়াচড়া করার আগেই সাপ ভয়ানক দ্রুতগতিতে আঘাত করল। সৈন্যবাহিনী ডুবে গেল এবং বজ্রধ্বনি হাসি দিয়ে সাপটি অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেল।

সবকিছু ঠিক হয়ে যাওয়ার পর বেলেরোফোন একটি গোপন পথ দিয়ে হ্রদ পেরিয়ে তার কুঁড়েঘরে চলে গেল। লিসিয়ার রাজা লোবেটসের নিকট যখন তার ছেলের মৃত্যুর খবর পৌঁছাল, তখন তার ছেলের মৃত্যুর জন্য দায়ী ব্যক্তির উদ্দেশ্যে লোক পাঠালেন।

বেলেরোফোন রাজার সামনে তার ঘটনাটি বর্ণনা করল। রাজাকে তাঁর ছেলের চেয়ে বেশি যুক্তিযুক্ত মনে হয়েছিল। রাজা বললেন, ‘তোমার ঘটনা প্রমাণ করার মতো কোন সাক্ষী আছে কি?’ ‘ঈশ্বর আমার সাক্ষী’, বেলেরোফোন বলল।

‘সৃষ্টিকর্তা তোমার পক্ষে সাক্ষ্য দেবেন না, তিনি দেবেন কি?’, রানি বললেন। ‘কিন্তু আমরা সৃষ্টিকর্তার ইচ্ছাকে জানতে পারি তাকে একটি কাজ দিয়ে তা সম্পূর্ণ করার জন্য।’

যদি তিনি কাজটি সম্পন্ন করতে পারেন, তবে তিনি নির্দোষ এবং যদি না করতে পারেন, তবে তিনি দোষী’, পুরোহিত বললেন। ‘কী বলো, রাখাল?’, রাজা বললেন।

বেলেরোফোন ঘোড়াটিকে মুক্ত করে। ‘আমি পেগাসাস। আমি তোমার সাহায্যের জন্য কৃতজ্ঞ, কিন্তু তুমি এ অন্ধকার জঙ্গলে কী করছ?’, ঘোড়াটি বলল।

বেলেরোফোন তার এখানে আসার কারণ বলল। ‘আপনার কাজ বিপজ্জনক! আমি আপনাকে আমাদের বন্ধুত্বের প্রতীক হিসেবে সাহায্য করব’, পেগাসাস বলল। ‘আমরা কাইমেরা কীভাবে খুঁজে পাব?’, বেলেরোফোন বলল।

পেগাসাস তার বড় ডানা খুলে বলল, ‘আমরা উড়তে পারব বলে এটা সহজ হবে।’ কিছুক্ষণ ওড়ার পর ওরা কাইমেরা পেরিয়ে এল। তাদের দেখামাত্রই সে আগুন নিশ্বাস ফেলতে শুরু করে। বেলেরোফোন তিরের পর তির ছুড়েছিল, কিন্তু জন্তুটিকে হত্যা করতে পারেনি।

অবশেষে, সে তার বর্শা নিয়ে কাইমেরার খোলা মুখের দিকে ছুড়ে মারল। সেই আঘাতের মাধ্যমে সে জন্তুটিকে হত্যা করে এবং তার সাফল্যের প্রমাণ হিসেবে তার মাথা নিয়ে আসে। সে যখন লিসিয়াতে ফিরে আসে, তখন নায়কের মতো অভ্যর্থনা পেল।

তার বিরুদ্ধে আনা সব অভিযোগ থেকে তাকে মুক্ত করা হলো। ‘আমার ছেলে, তুমি দীর্ঘজীবী হও’, রাজা লিসিয়া বেলেরোফোনকে বললেন। তারপর থেকে যুবক বেলেরোফোন লিসিয়ার নায়ক নামে পরিচিত।
