Is Population a Blessing or a Curse for Bangladesh
Bangladesh is beset with a number of problems. Population problem is one of them. It has assumed the form of explosion. So, it is high time to be aware of the consequences of this problem. The population of a country is generally an asset. But sometimes it becomes a problem when a country cannot afford to provide all its people with all the bare necessaries of life.
Bangladesh is a small country of only 55, 557 square miles. But the number of people has exceeded 15 crore. The density of population is about 2700 per sq. miles. The growth rate is 2.1 which is the highest in the world. So, it is a problem.
The causes of overpopulation are too many to mention. The main reason is illiteracy and religious superstition. Early marriage and polygamy are also responsible for this. Last but not the least, the lack of social awareness causes overpopulation.
The large population has become a burden for the country. All development activities are restricted for this overpopulation.
To restrict the rapid growth of population some measures should be taken. Firstly, people should be made aware through education. Secondly, early marriage and polygamy should be banned.
Thirdly, the population that we already have should be trained to make into skilled manpower and employed in income generating activities. Finally, we have to export this skilled manpower and earn foreign exchange to enrich our exchequer.
It is evident that Bangladesh is a populous country. But we cannot definitely say that it is overpopulated. Because the country has a vast unexplored resources.
By utilizing those unexplored resources, we can overcome the problems caused by the overpopulation. this we have to train up our manpower so that they can evolve own technology to boost both industrial and agricultural production. By doing this we can transform the large population into an important asset.
