Wh Questions

What is question?

Definition of Question: A sentence that asks a question is called an Interrogative Sentence.

Examples:
1. What is your name?
2. Do like to swim?

Kinds of Question: In English there are 3 kinds of Questions.
1. WH- Question
2. Yes/No Question
3. Tag Question

Wh question for kids

               
1. WH- Question: Which start with WH word like - who, what, how, when, where, which, whose, etc.

Examples:
1. What is your mother name?
2. Which pen do you need?
               
2. Yes/No Question: Which start with auxiliary verb like - am, is, are, was, were, can, could, shall, should, will, would, may, might, must etc.

Examples:
1. Do you like it? 
2. Can you complete the task?
               
3. Tag Question: This is used frequently in conversation to verify a statement.

Examples:
1. I write a letter, don’t I?
2. They can read, can’t they?

Wh Question rules


Rule 1: If we want to make a question with a subject of a sentence, then we have to use-
Who for = I, He, You, She, Name (Danny), They.
What/Which for = Animal and Inanimate Objects.
Whose for = My, Your, His, Her, Its, Erica's.

Examples:
1..He is a teacher.
Q: Who is a teacher? 

2. Computer is important.
Q: What is important?

3. The cow is an animal.
Q: Which is an animal?

4. His father is a doctor.
Q: Whose father is a doctor?

Rule 2: If we want to make a question with a subject of a sentence, there is no need of using extra Auxiliary Verb if there is no Auxiliary Verb in the sentence. On the other hands if we get any auxiliary verb in the sentence then, we shall use only that auxiliary verb.

Examples:
1. It makes me laugh.
Q: What makes you laugh?

2. He played cricket.
Q: Who played cricket?

3. They are eating.
Q: Who are eating?

N.B: There is no auxiliary verb in those sentences and so we have no need to use any auxiliary verb. This rule is only when we shall ask any question with a subject.

Rule 3: If we want to make a question from predicate of a sentence, then we have to use-
A. Whose for = My, Your, His, Her, Its, Richard.
B. What/Which for = Animal and Inanimate Objects.
C. Whom for = Me, You, Him, Her, It, Richard.
D. Why for = Reason.
E. Where for = Place.
F. How for = Quantity.
G. When for = Time.

Examples:
1. I want a black pen.
Q: Which pen do you want?

2. This is her book.
Q: Whose book is this?

3. I am twelve years old.
Q: How old are you?

4. She knows her.
Q: Whom does she know?

5. They saw him at 11 pm.
Q: When did they see?

6. You went to school.
Q: Where did you go?

Rule 4: If we want to make a question from predicate of a sentence, then we have to use Auxiliary Verb if there is no Auxiliary Verb in the sentence. (do, does for Present Indefinite Tense and did for Past Indefinite Tense). On the other hands if we get any auxiliary verb in the sentence then, we shall use only that auxiliary verb.

Examples:
1. I have forgotten her name.
Q: Whose name have you forgotten?

2. I went there for a pen.
Q: Why did you go there?

3. He works for eat.
Q: Why does he work?

4. They like honest person.
Q: How person do they like?
