The year 2020-2021 has been declared as the Mujib Borsho by the government of Bangladesh marking the centennial birth anniversary of the father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Mujib Borsho is being celebrated from March 17, 2020. The celebrations will end on March 31, 2022.

The Father of the Nation and the undisputed leader Bangabandhu was born on 17 March 1920 at Tungipara, Gopalganj. Again, on March 26. 2021, Bangladesh will mark the half- centenary of its independence. The announcement of Mujib Borsho is specially important as the role of Bangabandhu in achieving the independence of Bangladesh is undeniable. The celebrations began with fireworks at different venues across the country, at 8:00 pm to mark the moment when Bangabandhu was born.

The inaugural ceremony titled “Muktir Mohanayak” was aired on all TV channels of Bangladesh. Opening the show, 100 children sang the National Anthem and Dhonno Mujib Dhonno, a song dedicatèd to the Father of the Nation. Later, 100 renowned Bangladeshi singers performed the theme song of “Mujib Borsho” along with Bangabandhu's youngest daughter Sheikh Rehana. She also gave a short speech on the occasion. Then she recited a poem titled “Baba” written by her elder sister Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Along with Bangladesh, the Mujib Borhso is being celebrated globally with the initiative of UNESCO.

The government had chalked out various programmes to be observed throughout the year. However, the programmes have been rescheduled following the detection of coronavirus in Bangladesh and will end on December 16, 2021.

Mujib is the name of a legend. Bangladesh is fortunate enough to be endowed with such a great name. 17 March 2020 was the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of the nation.

The great leader was born on March 17, 1920 at the village Tungipara in Gopalganj district. The government of Bangladesh declared the period of 17 March 2020 to 26 March 2021 as Mujib Borsho. The announcement of Mujib Borsho has a significant meaning because the role of Bangabandhu in the independence of Bangladesh is undeniable.

The program started with a huge display of fireworks at Suhrawardy Uddyan. The streets of Dhaka city were decorated with colourful festoons and billboards, and buildings were adorned with lights of various colours. The President Abdul Hamid and the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina delivered speeches to the nation on television.

Both of them placed floral wreaths at the leader's mausoleum at Tungipara. The Prime Minister placed a wreath also at his portrait in Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road No. 32. Special prayers were arranged at all religious institutions , and food was distributed among cipnans and the poor. Due to the pandemic COVID - 19, the limited and the people of programmes Bangladesh could not celebrate the birth centenary of Bangabandhu properly.

So, the government has extended the time till March31, 2022. Really, Mujib Borsho is going to be an important part in the history of Bangladesh because in this period of time Bangladesh has already marked the half - centenary of its independence.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is the main artisan of independent Bangladesh, the dreamer of a Golden Bengal and the Father of our Nation. His courage and bold leadership helped us gain freedom from the clutch of Pakistani rulers. This great leader was born on March 17, 1920. So the Government of Bangladesh decided to honour this heroic leader by celebrating his birth centenary. On this occasion, the government declared the period of March 17, 2020 to December 16, 2021 as  ‘Mujib Borsho’ or ‘Mujib Year.’

Mujib Borsho was organized on the occasion of the centenary of Bangabandhu's birth. His biography and history for Bangladesh were presented to the new generation through various events throughout the year. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization popularly known as UNESCO joined the organization.

As a result, even though Bangladesh is the host country, Mujib Borsho was celebrated all over the world , which is a rare event. The government formed two national committees to mark the birth centenary of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Mujibur Part Rahman, one for planning Mujib Year celebrations and another for implementation. Out of many activities, the government could execute a few of them because of the global pandemic caused by coronavirus.

The government planted 10 million saplings across the country marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation. Prominent Indian film director Shyam Benegal was selected to make a Bangla film on the life and works of Bangabandhu. Different publications, including a compilation of reports by Pakistan's intelligence agency on Bangabandhu, were published. 

Besides, rare pictures of Bangabandhu were also collected. Moreover, the foreign ministry took initiatives to present the country's motto ‘Friendship to all, malice to none’, enunciated by Bangabandhu , across the world.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had promised to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary with people from every section of the society. She said during the first announcement of this celebration in 2018, “The Father of the Nation repaid his debt with his life. We must now repay him.” No matter what we do in honour of this great man, we can never repay the debt that we owe to him.
