এক সময় একজন সৎ ও ধার্মিক মানুষ ছিলেন। তার নাম ছিল আবু বেন আদেম। একসময় তিনি শান্তিতে ঘুমাচ্ছিলেন। হঠাৎ তিনি জেগে উঠলেন এবং একজন দেবদূতকে দেখতে পেলেন।
দেবদূত সেই ব্যক্তিদের নাম লিখছিলেন যারা ঈশ্বরকে ভালবাসত। তিনি ফেরেশতাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন তার নাম সেখানে আছে কিনা।
ফেরেশতা উত্তরে বললেন, তার নাম সেখানে নেই। আবু তখন তাকে তার নাম তালিকায় রাখার জন্য অনুরোধ করেন কারণ তিনি মানবজাতি এবং তার সহকর্মী ভাইদের ভালবাসেন।
ফেরেশতা তার অনুরোধ লিখে নিয়ে চলে গেলেন। পরের রাতে তিনি আবার হাজির হয়ে আবুকে দেখালেন যে তার নাম তালিকার শীর্ষে রয়েছে।
