অনুবাদ: সক্রেটিসের একজন স্ত্রী ছিলেন যার মেজাজ সামান্য কোনো ব্যাপারেই বিগড়ে যেত। একদিন ভদ্রমহিলা অন্য দিনগুলোর তুলনায় বেশি অগ্নিশর্মা হয়ে উঠলেন। তিনি গ্রিসের বিশিষ্ট পণ্ডিতকে অপমান করতে আরম্ভ করলেন। সক্রেটিস বাইরে গেলেন। তিনি তাঁর বাড়ির চৌকাঠে বসে বাইরে পথের দিকে তাকিয়ে ছিলেন। স্ত্রী দেখলেন যে তার স্বামী তার কথায় কর্ণপাতই করছেন না। তিনি এক বালতি পানি নিয়ে সক্রেটিসের দিকে এগিয়ে গেলেন। এবং তাঁর ওপর অনেক পানি ঢেলে দিলেন। ঘটনাটি দেখে পথচারীগণ অনেক মজা পেল। সক্রেটিস তাদের সঙ্গে হাসতে লাগলেন। তিনি আস্তে আস্তে মন্তব্য করলেন আমি এটাই প্রত্যাশা করছিলাম। আমি জানি যে, “বজ্রপাতের পরেই বৃষ্টিপাত হয়।”

অনুবাদ: অবশেষে বিদায়ের মুহূর্ত ঘনিয়ে এলো, আর শেষবারের মতো সক্রেটিস তাঁর শুভাকাঙ্ক্ষী ও শিষ্যদের সাথে সাক্ষাৎ করলেন। তিনি তাদের সাথে আত্মার অমরত্ব সম্পর্কে যুক্তি দেখালেন। তিনি তাদেরকে বললেন যে মানুষের আত্মা মরতে পারে না। সূর্যাস্তের সময় কারাধ্যক্ষ এলেন। তারপর পেয়ালা হাতে একজন লোক সেখানে এলেন। পেয়ালাটিতে প্রাণনাশী বিষ হেমলক ছিল। সক্রেটিস বিষের পেয়ালা হাতে তুলে নিলেন, প্রার্থনা করলেন এবং নিঃসঙ্কোচে হেমলক বিষ পান করলেন। তাঁর শুভাকাঙ্ক্ষী ও শিষ্যবৃন্দ এই দৃশ্য সহ্য করতে পারল না। তারা কান্নায় ভেঙে পড়ল আর শিশুদের মতো উচ্চেঃস্বরে কাঁদতে লাগল। তিনি তাদের অনুরোধ করলেন, তারা যেন তাকে শান্তিতে মৃত্যুবরণ করতে দেয়।
